Website Status

04 Dec 2006 / 0 Comments / in Snoloha Life/by Snoloha Rod

The website has been “launched” for a couple weeks now and we have recieved a number of compliments and suggestions from our visitors along the way.
There are still a handful of issues that we are working on.  In fact, we have a “to do” list of 9 more items yet.  Included is the continuing Internet Explorer headache we are experiencing with the “Contact” page and the Men’s main category page.  On both these pages the content is supposed to be immediately to left of the sidebar navigation just like the rest of the site, but for some reason you have to scroll down to see it.  Again, this is only in Internet Explorer and only these two pages.  If you are using Safari or Firefox it looks just fine.

The remaining items on the “to do” list deal primarily with design elements, style finalization, along with the photo gallery layout.

Yes, it has been a long process.  However, building an e-commerce site from the groud up is a very large project and it simply does take time.  I also wanted to mention my web designer.  It is probably worth noting that he took on this project as a freelance project outside of his normal day job.  So, he works each day from 8am until 5 or 6pm, gets home 45 minutes later and has my project to work on.  So for him to build this website during his off time, basically means that he gets very little off time.

In addition to the great job he has done on the site so far, he saved me thousands of dollars by offering a very generous “friends” rate for this project.

So yes, the site continues to experience some bumps along the way, but as I am learning very quickly, it is all part of the start up process.

Startup Nation Podcast

01 Dec 2006 / 0 Comments / in Snoloha Life/by Snoloha Rod

Thanks to Joel and the entire crew at Startup Nation for featuring myself and Snoloha in today’s podcast.

You can listen to the podcast here, or by first visiting the Starup Nation.

It’s about 15 – 20 minutes long. And the great thing about Podcasts is you can listen to them whenever you’d like.

Enjoy!

Random Quote (Lyric)

01 Dec 2006 / 0 Comments / in Daydreamin'/by Snoloha Rod

I guess I’m just in a quote mood today.  As I listen to my iTunes library, one of my favorite Dave Matthews songs is playing and I just had to share…”Would you not like to be, sitting on top of the world with your legs hanging free.”

Snoloha Weather

01 Dec 2006 / 0 Comments / in Snoloha Life/by Snoloha Rod

Mark Twain once said, “climate is what we expect, weather is what we get.”  Well Mr. Twain, I have yet to visit Texas, but I have an idea of the climate I’d expect, and not the weather they are getting.  Check out this excerpt from the AP via Yahoo News, “In the Texas Panhandle, roads were covered with ice and up to 7 inches of snow.”

We are also getting buried as I type this here in northern Michigan, and just a couple days ago it was sweatshirt weather!

Typical Snoloha type weather, and a great opportunity to add some Texas winter photos to the Snapshots & Scenery photo gallery.

A Snoloha Christmas in Ohio

30 Nov 2006 / 0 Comments / in Snoloha Life/by Snoloha Rod

Christmas in Ohio

Our friends Adam and Hesper spent the Thanksgiving holiday with family in Ohio. Not only did they celebrate Turkey Day, but they also exchanged Christmas gifts with the family. Thanks for sharing the photo, spreading the Snoloha lifestyle, and “welcome” to our newest friends in the Buckeye State.

Startup Paralysis

30 Nov 2006 / 0 Comments / in Bidness/by Snoloha Rod

Seth, a fellow StartupNation community member, has a great read regarding the “paralysis” of starting a business. It’s well worth the read, not just if you’re considering starting a business, but if you’re considering trying anything new and different.

Here’s an excerpt:

“I thought a great deal about that day before I started my own business this past May. People say when you start a business there are no guarantees. They are wrong.

If I didn’t start my own business I was GUARANTEED to never to have control over my life, my time and my financial abilities. I was GUARANTEED to always be at the mercy of others and their decisions. I was GUARANTEED to have limited growth in a company that wasn’t mine. And I was GUARANTEED to forever feel like a scared little chicken-shit loser who was afraid to take a punch.”

The full post is located here.

Thanks Seth!

Leadership

29 Nov 2006 / 0 Comments / in Bidness/by Snoloha Rod

Great leaders. Whether you are talking about Martin Luther King, Jr., FDR, Steve Jobs, or Michael Jordan, they all share similar qualities. I am by no means a history buff and I don’t claim to be an expert in leadership. Rather it seems to be common sense observations that you can learn from influential personas throughout history – be it reading about them, listening to them speak, or watching them on TV.

Strong businesses with productive and happy employees, positive morale, and an enjoyable work environment are the result of leadership.

Great leaders inspire. They are able to inspire because they are truly passionate about the cause, the product, the business, and the team. Passion can be contagious. Passion can make believers out of non-believers. Passion is a powerful leadership quality – it inspires.

Great leaders are forward thinking. They are not content with the status quo. They want to go to the edge. They want to invent the next great product, create social movements, and see the play happen before it actual does. Forward thinking allows them to be prepared. Chance favors the prepared mind.

Great leaders care. They care about their teammates, their employees, their constituents, and their students. They don’t forget about the ones who are working with them to achieve the end goal. The do not get so wrapped up and lost in the cause or the number of wins that they forget how they have gotten this far in the first place.

Great leaders educate. Their first reaction isn’t to fire the employee, flunk the student, or question a teammate’s efforts. They want to help. They want to see others succeed. They are not self-involved on some personal mission. They are on a mission to make those around them better people, whether they even realize it or not.

I think I will continue another day. I don’t want to get too long winded here. But it is a topic that I get very excited about and before I know it this post could end up way to long.
So for for now, to be continued…
