Continued Inspiration

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

One of my favorite things to do every now and then is to go back and read the feedback and answers that I received when I asked the question: “What does Snoloha mean to you?”

Those answers, in addition to all the great photos that you send in, are an extremely important component to the continued growth of the Snoloha brand. It adds a degree of inspiration that I cannot find on my own. I can preach all day long about what Snoloha means to me and what my vision is for the brand and how I live the lifestyle and on and on and on…but when I see and hear how YOU connect with it and live it, it keeps me motivated even more so than I already am.

For those of you who have not yet sent in your answer (to the question that is bothering me so)…fell free to do so, there might just be something in it for you.

So…what does Snoloha mean to you? Here’s the contact link.

It’s hard to pick a favorite…but one that sticks out and hits the Snoloha concept right on the head went like this:

“Snoloha: It’s a state of mind. It’s knowing that when life gets hectic you can relax with a cocktail on the beach or the ski slope. It’s knowing that we work all week for the weekend. It’s working your tail off so you can get away from it all. It doesn’t matter if that’s on the beaches of St. Thomas, the slopes of Whistler, or the above ground pool in your neighbor’s backyard.”

Snoloha Moments

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Snoloha has been driven and defined primarily by myself and by lots of input from you…and what it (Snoloha) means to you.

The objective of the brand is escapism, enjoying all the seasons that Mother Nature throws at us, and combining the enjoyment into this melting pot of a lifestyle brand…thus creating a word (Snoloha), a logo (SnoFlake Palm Tree) and designs (Palm Tree Chair Lift, for example) that can’t really happen, but still make a ton of sense for those that appreciate the brand and what it stands for.

Yesterday I had one of my “Snoloha Moments”. And I realized that it’s been some time since I’ve shared one.

It was HOT and HUMID here in Traverse City, so I decided to cool off with some time on the water and quick stand up paddle board session. It was great…the Tall Ship Manitou was leaving her dock as I was passing under it, the NautiCat was out for an evening sail and the Grand Traverse Yacht Club’s Tuesday night Laser races were underway.

I paddle my way through the sailboat mooring field, along the shoreline to what I call “Hobie Cat Corner” and back to where I launched, across the street from the Maritime Heritage Alliance, where resting quietly are a handful of wooden sailboats.

That is when I came upon an older gentlemen preparing for an evening sail…aboard what I learned is the replica of an 1800’s Mackinac boat that was extremely popular in the northern Great Lakes (”like having a pickup truck in those days”, he informed me). It’s about 20 feet in length, has 2 masts and a jib sail…and is all wood. My mind immediately began to envision what it must have been like in those days navigating the open waters of Lake Michigan on such a small boat.

But then to my surprise he turned his attention to my paddle board and began a series of inquiries. He was just as interested in my paddle board as I was his old wooden boat. He seemed like an interesting old salt, the kind of guy you pass a bottle of rum with and just sit back and listen.

Eventually, I loaded up the Jeep and called it an evening.

I should mention also that while I was on the water, in the middle of summer, I could not help but think of the upcoming winter season and enjoying time on the snowboard instead.

THAT is Snoloha for me. It’s about the feeling I get. It’s about the enjoyment. It’s about the escapism from everyday life now and then. It’s about time on the water and the beach during the warmer months and then time on, and in, the snow in the the colder ones. It’s about being outside and simply enjoying life somewhere between the islands and the arctic.

For you, it may be different. And that’s okay. In fact…tell me what it is to you (there may be something in it for you!)

Blatant Promo

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Yup…that’s right. This post is all about promoting the design work of Lake Effect Design. Lake Effect is owned by Joe Gabry. Joe is responsible for quite a few of the Snoloha designs you see on the website, that retailers see in the wholesale catalog and that you will continue to see as the brand grows…along with the branding and marketing collateral that we unveiled late last year. So yes, Joe has been an integral component to Snoloha’s growth and branding efforts, and will remain an important role as brand awareness and demand continue to increase organically (how’s that for corporate speak?).

Basically what I’m saying is that Joe is a kick-ass designer and I wanted to take a moment to blatantly promote his new company.

The new website is currently under construction, but you can check ‘em out on Facebook as well, facebook.com/LakeEffectDesign.

The Palm Tree Chair Lift design that Joe did has quickly become the best selling and most popular design in the Snoloha lineup.

Guys…get yours here.

Gals..here you go.

It’s been quite a learning experience with this blog and weaving throughout it personal and business related stories, thoughts and news. My lifestyle and the inspiration behind Snoloha is part of the personal drive behind the brand so there has to be certain amount of intimacy for customers to feel a part of and connect with it. At the same time I’m careful not to get too personal…it has to be relevant to the brand in order for it to be “blog worthy”.

And now, there literally is a Snoloha Baby that has made her world debut. I have a picture on my personal Facebook page, but that’s about all you’ll probably be seeing as I’m a horrible “personal facebooker”…I really utilize it more for business than pleasure.

So I now have this dilemma of how not to come across as exploiting my daughter in attempts to drive sales.

However, I also have realized the power that these little babies have over you and I’m sure at some point I will succumb to the temptations and she will indeed make her debut on this website or maybe a design will be named after her (Joe…you reading this?). Jimmy Buffett once said, “if you don’t write a song about your daughter, you will go to hell.” I can’t write songs, so a Snoloha inspired design may have to do.

And the song that Buffett penned? “Little Miss Magic”

She’s constantly amazed by the blades of
the fan on the ceiling
And the funny little faces she makes
can’t help but be appealing
She loves to ride through the town with the top down
Feel the warm breeze on her gentle skin
She is my next of kin

Chorus
I see a little more of me everyday
I catch a little more moustache turning grey
Your mother is the only other woman for me
Little Miss Magic what you gonna be?

Sometimes I catch her dreaming and wonder
where that little mind meanders
Is she down along the shore or
strolling cross the broad Savannah’s
I know in time she’ll learn to make up her own mind
In time she’s gonna learn to fly
Oh that I won’t deny

Fun Feedback

Thought I’d share a few Twitter and Facebook posts that I got a kick out of.

From Facebook:

I got rear ended today and the lady said she was distracted my the Snoloha sicker on my van!!!!

I love following your business and the way you think! Keep at it…Jeep and Buffett would make great brand partnerships!

For those of you not yet familiar with the best lifestyle clothing brand in the world, Snoloha, here is the link.

From Twitter:

What a memorable company name! @Snoloha: “It’s the lifestyle somewhere between the islands and the Arctic”

My first @snoloha purchase came, just in time for Buffett. Matching tees – BF will love it

(Here’s the photo that was uploaded to accompany this tweet…thanks again Rachel from Girly Drinks. I’ve yet to hear if the BF loved matching shirts though…)

I’ve been doing a less than ideal job at keeping up with my regular blog posts…and the social networking, well…don’t even get me started. Not to mention I have a bunch of new products that I need to get on the website because they are not going to go out and sell themselves.

It’s been very busy behind the scenes. Fulfilling summer retailer orders has required a substantial amount of time and once those are completed my attention turns to the fall / winter tradeshow and selling season. And with the addition of an East Coast sales rep showing the brand at numerous trade shows beginning in September, as VP Joe Biden would say, “this is a big f*&#@!g deal”. Plus there are things brewing with Snoloha International and a very important meeting coming up in September that is on my mind and which I need to prepare for.

Oh, and then there’s that whole first baby due in one month. Yea…that requires some attention too.

Am I complaining? No…just being transparent. This is all GREAT stuff. But it’s taken some wind out of my online activities lately. For me, this makes squeezing in a sail, being down on the docks, or having a cold one with friends even more important “Snoloha Moments”. And I just don’t seem to be programmed to capture those moments with my iPhone and posting for all to see…so they they may escape the handcuffs we call mobile devices, but they never leave the file folder in my head where all those other “moments” are stored.

I’m going to work on getting the new product on the site as soon as I can. Retail orders should be complete this week, which will free up some time.

My “web guy” sent me a note yesterday about the new Snoloha.com he’s working on. It was good timing…as I replied to him, I need a kick in the pants. I’ve hit an online information overload point and it’s time to hit the refresh button.

Remember, I’m preaching “escapism” with this brand. It’s carrying a vacation mentality through everyday life. It is enjoying life somewhere between the islands and the arctic.

So once the retail orders are fulfilled and the new product is on the site…I’m thinking an online vacation might be a good way to recharge. Yea…I like that idea. I’ll put some more thought into it…see if I can’t wrap some sort of promo around it.

In case you were wondering, coming to the website are more baby onsies, new toddler t’s, new gals t’s, a new guys t, more hats, margarita glasses, H2O bottles and can koozies…oh my.

Relaxing is hard work?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

How can that be true? Say it isn’t so.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, “Why Relaxing is Hard Work”…it’s true. Of the many disturbing aspects of this article, perhaps the quote that is most bothersome is this one:

“I can sit on a beach for, like, 15 minutes, then it’s ‘OK, what’s next?’ “

That’s a horrifying thought, that one cannot relax on a beach.

The best quote goes like this:

“Regardless of what is happening, I am unplugging that little torture device.”

Those little torture devices. I’m a proponent of shutting ‘em down and taking a break from all the email, texting and social networking nonsense once in a while and actually fully enjoying whatever it is you are doing.

The article goes on to describe several tactics to use for those that can’t seem to relax. I noticed they forgot to mention that wearing Snoloha gear contributes to an escapism mentality and makes relaxing a bit easier to handle.

I’m sure if I contact Melinda Beck, the author of the article, she will indeed publish a follow up article that highlights nothing but Snoloha and how it helps people escape from the realities of everyday life now and then. Yep, I”m sure the Wall Street Journal wants to run that piece.

Just Another A-Hole?

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Am I?

Am I just another A-Hole growing a “lifestyle brand”? Seriously. I saw a new business the other day that is selling a stick. The kind of stick that falls off a tree. But it’s not just a stick, it’s the lifestyle around the stick they are selling.

Okay. I made the stick business up. But I have noticed that just about every new business launched these days seems to have this idea that they are going to market the product around a lifestyle and connect with like-minded individuals through social networking. Original. Not really.

It really got me to thinking about Snoloha. I actually started questioning if I’m just another wannabe lifestyle entrepreneur trying to build the next Life is Good (the second coolest brand your money can buy). I let it get to me, big time. I really took a hard look at my brand and my business. I took a hard look at my vision and where I see this brand going.

The answer, after stressing a considerable amount, to the question “am I just another a-hole trying to grow a lifestyle brand?“…(all jokes aside, I know who you are!) is NO.

I’ve been working on this concept and brand since 2003 when the idea first came to me. The first version of Snoloha.com was launched late 2006 and we debuted at retail in early 2007. Mistakes…I’ve made a few, and there are going to be plenty more. Stress…you betcha. Worry…uh-huh. Fun…absolutely. Fulfilling…without a doubt. Regrets…nope. This isn’t a half-assed attempt to be the next Life is Good. This is a full fledged, totally committed to the ups and downs and the bumps and bruises of small business life, drive to be the first Snoloha…and not the next Life is Good.

Speaking of mistakes (and I’ve made more than a few)…the inventory on the website right now is still awful. I’ve got a bunch of blanks ready to be printed but they are in line behind all the summer retailer orders that need to be delivered first. So there IS new inventory coming! There are also a few items that probably were not the best idea to add to the collection that I NEED to get rid of and will be marking down to an attractive “must buy” price.

Lastly, since I’m on a roll here, there’s still the part of me that wants to incorporate giving back as part of the business model. The easy thing to do and the most common, of course, is to say with every purchase you make a certain percentage or dollar amount goes to a certain cause. But, as always with me, I don’t much care for easy and common. After a very long talk with a close friend / advisor about his topic, there are some initial thoughts and ideas in place. It’s going to take some work, but I think it will be fun, interactive and will make an impact…stay tuned.

If you’ve read this far…you deserve something. How about a couple free Snoloha Koozies or a new H2O Bottle (neither of these items are on the site yet) with your next purchase? All you have to do is shoot me a note and write Koozie or H20 Bottle in the subject line. I’ll match it up with the name on your order. Easy as that.

You may already be there

Every once in a while I’m reminded of a previous blog post that I feel needs revisiting. Yesterday got me to thinking about one in particular.

We spent the afternoon sailing aboard the “Snoloha” sailing yacht (which entailed the pull chord to the outboard…pulling all the way out while attempting to start the motor in order to drop the sails, which isn’t good. But we got her back to the marina safely, and now need to do a little motor work. Boats, gotta love ‘em.) Anyway, the day ended back at the house, hanging with the dogs while cooking out in the yard…hammock and all.

Yes, it was good day. It was a simple day. A simple little 23′ Hunter, a cheap Home Depot grill, a little food, the wife and the dogs. It was a great day, actually. The kind of day to be thankful for.

But in today’s “grow, grow, grow” business world, it’s not enough to enjoy what you have…you need to be concerned with what you don’t have yet and the __% revenue growth in order to maintain blah, blah, blah and increase brand awareness by yada, yada, yada, while out-performing the industry thingamajiggy to maximize profits and make a crap-load (that’s an industry term) of money, while probably screwing over a few folks along the way but all the while padding your bank account for more stuff you don’t really need.

Okay, enough of my venting. This story has many variations. The one I like is from the wall at Ivan’s Stress Free Bar on Jost Van Dyke (British Virgin Islands), located next to the pay phone…yes that is a Snoloha sticker in the photo.

Here ya go:
ivans_phone
A boat docked in a tiny island village.

An American tourist complimented the fisherman on the quality of his find and asked how long it took him to catch them. “Not very long,”answered the fisherman.

“But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more” asked the American. The fisherman explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his need and those of his family.

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, play the guitar, and sing a few songs” I have a full life.”

The American interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard, and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer everyday. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?” asked the fisherman. “With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Atlanta, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?” asked the fisherman. “Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,” replied the American.

“And after that?” “Afterwards? Well my Friend. That’s when it gets really interesting,” answered the American, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that” said the fisherman. “After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny little village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings doing what you like and enjoying your friends.”

And the morale is: Know where you’re going in life..you may already be there.

A Little Help…

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Growing a brand online is…complicated, between the Facebook’s and Twitters and shopping carts and analytics and mobile devices and search engines and this and that and yada yada yada.

By far my favorite and most enjoyable aspect of this crazy online world we live in is this blog. I’ve been blogging since late 2006. That is a lot of rambling! Not once has any blog post ever been written for search engine optimization purposes. SEO nuts will think I’m nuts. But the reality is that I write for my customers and not for Google. And yes, I know Google is watching, they control everything.

I hope all of you enjoy this blog and the words that I try to string together to fill it.

With sailing season finally upon us here in northern Michigan, it is my duty to be sure the Snoloha Sailing Yacht (again, it’s all of 23 feet in length, so it’s really not a yacht but it’s fun to say ‘yacht’) has plenty of time on the water with sails flying. You see, since it’s name is “Snoloha” it really is work related and extremely important to the long term sustainability of the brand that it makes as many public appearances as possible. As they say in the advertising world…it’s all about number of ‘impressions.”

This is a very tough job and I’m up for the challenge, but I thought I’d ask for a little help…filling this blog! And, if you are in Traverse City this summer, you could always help fly some sails.

Here’s what I’m thinking (scary, I know):

  • Nothing makes my day more than receiving photos of folks in their Snoloha gear. So start sending ‘em in! And remember you could win more Snoloha gear by doing so.
  • Don’t have any Snoloha gear yet? No worries, mon. Send in photos of your Snoloha lifestyle…for a chance to win Snoloha gear. Then you will be able to send in photos of you in your Snoloha gear for a chance to win more Snoloha gear. At that rate you can have a wardrobe of Snoloha gear without ever paying for it! Hmmm…maybe I need to rethink the contest rules.
  • Send in your answers to the question, “What does Snoloha mean to you?”
  • Send in your own Snoloha Barefoot & Exposed blog post…of course I’ll review and get your permission before posting and you will be credited as the author.

There you have it…4 ways you can contribute to the Snapshots & Scenery blog and ultimately make my challenge of sailing as much as possible this summer attainable.

Here’s all the contact info.
