Margarita Mafia

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Continuing with the previous Trop Rock entry, I wanted to share with everyone the Margarita Mafia - A resource for like-minded people who enjoy the music of Independent Trop Rock Singers and Songwriters. I just learned about them myself after listening to one of JimmyPirate’s Podcasts. Check out their website for more info on artists, events, photos, and how to join.

I love the Creed:

We love the sun, the sand, the sea.
We believe in simplifying life.We believe that stress is evil and must be avoided at all costs.
We believe that tropical shirts, shorts and flip flops are the appropriate attire for most social situations.
We see the world in blue and white…..and tan, definitely tan.
We believe that life is like a good margarita — sweet, tangy and salty around the edges.
We believe all these things are best shared with friends: cocktails, laughs, music….and time.
We support Independent Artists who write songs about these subjects.

Artists who participate in the Margarita Mafia and “Family Members” must agree to the following beliefs:
    Margarita Mafia
    Music should lift us up.
    Music should make us laugh.
    Music should make us think.
Music should make us feel alive.
A live show should be entertaining, that’s why it’s LIVE.
Each show should end with one big JAM SESSION

    Music is its own reward.
    No egos. Period.

Trop Rock?

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

I’ve posted a handful of entries that have highlighted lyrics from artists such as The Boat Drunks, Jim Morris, and Jim Hoehn.

In case you didn’t know, their music is considered “Trop Rock.” What is Trop Rock? Well, according to Jimmy Pirate over at TropiCast,

“Trop-Rock is a sub genre of music that deals with Tropical Fixation. It can also be classified in multiple genres. Rock, Country, Jazz, Reggae, Cajun, Pop. If it has a tropical feel and tells stories about far off islands, tiki bars, boat drinks or anything else that involves hanging on a beach with your toes in the sand, you could call it Trop-Rock.”

And of course the most popular Trop Rock artist would be Mr. Jimmy Buffett. If you enjoy this type of music and lyrics, be sure to check out the TropiCast Radio Showcase mentioned above. The TropiCast is a podcast devoted to playing some of the best Trop Rock out there, but also explores the artists’ stories and where to find out more about them.

So g’head and grab a cold-one, kick-up your barefeet, close your eyes and drift away.

Snoloha on Mlive.com

Monday, May 7th, 2007

A big “thanks” to Kim Schneider at Mlive.com for a great description of Snoloha in today’s Traveling Coach article. I love her explanation of the brand:

“But even cooler is what the concept represents: carrying a vacation mentality through everyday life, celebrating and enjoying all the seasons that get thrown at us.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself Kim, thanks again.

Seems only appropriate to share this song as the shoreline of West Grand Traverse Bay is slowly filling up with sailing and motor boats attached to their respective mooring balls.

As for the Snoloha corporate yacht, well, it still needs a little engine work before she touches the water. Okay, maybe it’s not a “yacht”, but it is a boat.

And anyone reading this who owns a boat or who has owned a boat has probably asked themselves this question, “why?” Why own a boat when you have friends with boats, right? I don’t know either. I guess it makes me feel cool staring at the engine and touching certain hoses like I know what I’m doing. And if I didn’t own a boat, then I couldn’t back it into the garage in the winter, crank up the heat, kick on some tunes, fill up the cooler and watch the snow falling outside and saying things like, “can’t wait until summer to drop this beast in the water.”

Anyway, I digress. The boat will be in the water this year…

    “Marinas in the morning
    Seem so calm and still
    Coffee poured at dockside
    Warms the early chill
    Rosy streaks of rising sun
    Fading shades of gray
Sliding past the boat slips now
    Gently on my way

    From this moment on
    It’s gonna get better
    Life and luck
    Just changes on the water
    One big morning kiss
    Everyday should be like this
It’s all about life, oh yeah
    It’s all about love

Water days can take me back
    To the simpler times
Water days can clear my head
And bring me words and rhymes
    From the morning calm
    To the evening breeze
    Take it all the way
Make a toast to the setting sun
    A perfect water day”

2007 Top 100 Places To Live

Friday, May 4th, 2007

In case you haven’t seen or heard this, Traverse City Michigan is #2 in Relocate-America’s Top 100 Places to Live 2007. And in case you didn’t know, Traverse City is the home of Snoloha and it’s global headquarters. Keep in mind that “global headquarters” can be interpreted however you’d like. Either as a state of the art, contemporary office space with lofted ceilings and funky furniture, to a small home office where the Board of Directors consists of 2 weiner dogs and a lab mix…Either way, it’s a great place to call home!

Margaritaville Frozen Concoction Maker

It’s that time of year. Backyard barbeques, beach boils, boating, and blenders!

Unlike a blender, the Frozen Concoction Maker, from Margaritaville Cargo, shaves ice and blends it with your favorite ingredients for restaurant-quality consistency every time. Take the guesswork out of frozen beverages with its pre-programmed automatic settings. Simply, fill the ice hopper with ice, add ingredients to the blending jar and fire it up! It does all the work… you take all the credit!

The Dave Matthews Band, track number 11 from the 1996 album, “Crash”.

    “Tripping Billies”

    “We’re wearing nothing
    Nothing but our shadows
Shadows falling down on the beach sand
    Remembering once,
Out on the beaches we wore
    Pineapple grass bracelets

    So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
    Such a happy human race

    ‘Cause we’re Tripping Billies

    We are all sitting
    Legs crossed round a fire
    My yellow flame she dances
    Tequila drinking, oh, our
    Minds will wander
    To wondrous places

    So why would you care
To get out of this place
You and me and all our friends
    Such a happy human race

    Eat, drink, and be merry
    For tomorrow we die
    Eat, drink, and be merry
    For tomorrow we die”
